SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING

Clowes Memorial Hall and The Hoosier Writing Project at IUPUI are happy to officially invite students in grades 7–12 to participate in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2010.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s largest, longest-running, and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts. Nearly 200,000 students will accept the challenge to go beyond the classroom assignment, creating daring and innovative works. They will submit their best pieces for review by panels of art and writing professionals, and compete for recognition, scholarships, and exhibition opportunities. But, The Awards are only half of the story: entering is a fantastic opportunity for students to have their voices heard, to focus their creative energy.

Patricia Frederick, an art teacher from Wisconsin, said it best: “The Awards give students a genuine picture of what quality looks like, and somehow make it all seem within their reach. The Awards help our students think like real artists. Grades can’t do that.”

Why do students participate in The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards?

• College Preparation: to develop the skills and vision needed for college admissions
• Scholarships: to earn scholarships from a pool of $3.60 million in tuition support, the largest source of funding for teens in the arts
• Summer Intensives: to earn scholarships to attend summer arts/writing intensive programs
• Professional Experience: to build credentials for resumes and applications to college and employers
• Prestige: to participate in the nation’s most prestigious recognition program for artists and writers

This program has identified the early promise of Richard Avedon, Joyce Maynard, Tom Otterness, Philip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates, Andy Warhol, and Zac Posen.
